Project Overview

While working at the Ralph Lauren Madison Avenue Cafe in New York City, I was selected through an internal essay submission to attend Ralph Lauren’s Career Aspiration Day in Greensboro, North Carolina. Employees from across the country were invited to participate in leadership workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities with corporate executives.

After returning to New York, I wrote a feature article documenting the experience and later presented the event and my insights to the entire Ralph Lauren Madison Avenue team.

Inside Ralph Lauren Career Development

In the heart of North Carolina, amidst the serene landscape of Greensboro, a transformative journey unfolded from April 2nd to April 4th. This wasn't just any corporate event; it was the North Carolina Ralph Lauren Career Development Event—a three-day immersion into the world of aspirations, learning, and connection within the esteemed Ralph Lauren Corporation.

April 5, 2024

Before the event took place, there was a contest that stirred excitement among employees, prompting them to articulate their passion for Ralph Lauren through essays that delved into their motivations and aspirations. Those selected to attend, including myself, embarked on a transformative experience that unfolded against the backdrop of Greensboro's vibrant charm.

Upon arrival, the opulent accommodations set the stage for what was to come, Natalia Alekhina a Ralph Lauren Sales Professional said "The hotel was absolutely gorgeous and luxurious. It just goes to show how Ralph Lauren values their employees' experiences." As we gathered for dinner at Natty Green, Derek Vittatoe, one of the event's organizers, infused the evening with levity, reminding us of the importance of balance and camaraderie.

The following morning dawned with anticipation as we convened for a leader-led breakfast at the Ralph Lauren Distribution Center. Amidst the bustling corridors of this logistical hub, we had the privilege of engaging with esteemed leaders, including the regional CEO (Bob Ranftl) and Head of HR (Tony Curtis) of North American operations, who shared insights and anecdotes that resonated deeply with each attendee.

These leaders strived to make the experience very inspirational and gave hope to their employees. "It’s important to stay diligent and true to your goals and aspirations. Every single one of you have the opportunities and tools ahead of you to succeed." Ranftl stated at the breakfast table. Followed by Mr. Curtis’s words of encouragement and sharing his growth in the company when he started in human resources 20 years ago.

The day unfolded with a series of enlightening sessions, ranging from goal-oriented workshops to resume-building seminars, each tailored to empower attendees in their career trajectories. During the seminar, after an employee, Simone Clark, expressed her frustrations about the company not hiring from within.

Marissa Reale, Talent Acquisition, responded, "I understand it can be frustrating when you don’t immediately get the role you set out for, but you got to think, what else can I do, how can I prepare myself better for the next time that opportunity comes around.”

As we navigated the booths at the career fair, representatives from diverse departments explained the vast array of opportunities within Ralph Lauren, igniting aspirations and forging connections.

There was a panel lined up to answer questions from the attended and share their experiences, “You want to know why I love Ralph Lauren? because I was able to have a career here, leave for 8 years raise my family, do the mom thing, and come back picked up where I left off. Now I’ve been here for 20 years. I just don’t know another company where I could’ve possibly done that." - Cindy

That evening, all the corporate leaders and winners convened at Palette Place, where conversations flowed easily, and experiences were exchanged in a setting of rustic elegance for dinner. Here, amidst a diverse tapestry of voices and perspectives, the spirit of growth and collaboration thrived, leaving a mark on all who participated.

As the event concluded with a farewell breakfast, relationships were strengthened with commitments to keep connected via LinkedIn—a concrete reminder of the long-lasting bonds formed during our time together. With Mr. Curtis parting remarks lingering in our hearts, we left, energized, and inspired, carrying with us the seeds of ambition nurtured in the halls of Ralph Lauren.
